BDS: Bachelor of Dental Surgery
BDS stands for Bachelor of Dental Surgery. It is a medical field of surgery related to mouth and handling the injuries related to teeth, jaw, and gums. It is a five year undergraduate degree program in dentistry to prepare students for successful career as a dental surgeon. The five years of dental course is divided in two parts:
- Four year training
- One year compulsory internship

The BDS course is not only restricted to treating tooth decay. It also gives emphasis on denture, surgery and multiple dental problems.
Eligibility
The students who have passed the 10+2 examination in science stream with physics, chemistry and biology are eligible for this course. These students have to appear and clear the BDS entrance test that can be at state level or national level. These entrance tests are conducted by various colleges and universities that offer BDS course.

It is an ideal career orientated course. After the successful completion of the BDS degree, a student can gain practical experience through internship at any private or government dental clinic. He can run a dental clinic after gaining practical experience.
A qualified surgeon can also get a job of dentist in state or central government hospitals. There are also various careers options for a BDS in the pharmaceutical companies and medical equipment manufacturing companies. Indian army also recruits the dentist in army hospitals. Depending on their interest and ability, BDS degree holders can apply for pursuing Master degree.
