VPI stands for Virtual Path Identifier. It is an 8-bit field in the header of an ATM cell. It acts as a data communication identifier that establishes a virtual network path for an asynchronous transfer mode.
ATM cells generally pass through ATM switches. VPI tells the switches about the route of cell as the cell travels through the ATM network. Generally, the VPI is used with VCI to identify the route or destination of the cell. The function of VPI is similar to the function of DLCI in Frame Relay.
